“Triple Spinning Balance” came to Cynthia Kirkwood in a dream. “I saw it floating alone in darkness. A mysterious compass with three spinnings parts. It held itself in continuous motion, continuous balance. But usually colors and images come in directly as I draw and paint.” Since the age of 10 she has been receiving a visual language through automatic drawing, painting in a state of ‘no-mind’, through dreams and also through communication with certain plants and trees. Forms and compositions establish themselves through her and rather than depicting something they are objects in themselves - mysterious seeds, doorways, keys, offerings - channeling beneficial energy.

Cynthia Kirkwood holds a BFA from Middlebury College and studied at the New York Studio School and then in Umbria, Italy with Nicholas Carone. She was born in Zurich and raised in Bermuda. Her exploratory spirit has taken her to study and work in diverse parts of the world including Paris, London, Umbria, Italy, Chiapas, Mexico, Haiti and Sifnos, Greece. Her work has been exhibited in Bermuda, London, Nantucket, Vermont, Italy, Richmond, VA, Dublin and New York. She lives and works in Vermont and Bermuda.
